Why Sober October?
Sober October is here in the UK, and that means we need to order water, juice, or soda from the pub with our fish and chips. Unfortunately, that's not exactly the easiest thing to accomplish. If you're used to drinking every day, every other day, or every couple of days, it's hard to quit cold turkey for a month. However, it is worth giving it a shot for the following three reasons.
1. Improved Mood And Anxiety
It's no secret that alcohol is linked to anxiety and mood disorders such as depression. Alcohol is an endless cycle of believing it's treating depression while simultaneously being one of the causes behind it. While there may be a nominal increase in dopamine, it fluctuates as badly as serotonin, which can throw the mood all over the place. Taking a break from alcohol will help stabilise these chemicals in the brains.
2. Better Sleep
There's nothing like getting the recommended eight hours of continuous, uninterrupted sleep a night. However, if you're a heavy drinker, then you probably have forgotten what that's like. That's because alcohol does quite a number on the sleep-wake cycle. Not only that, not getting enough sleep worsens stress, making people turn to alcohol in the first place. It's a brutal cycle one can break by taking a break from alcohol.
3, The Weight Will Come Right Off
Alcohol is called “empty calories” for a reason. Since most alcohol is nothing but sugar with little to no nutrients, all you’re doing is filling your body with nothing but calories. Not only that, your body uses what nutrients it does have to try to cleanse your body of this alcohol, which could lead to nutritional deficiencies. Cutting the drinking is one way to also cut the calories.
You might have trouble cutting alcohol cold. Fortunately, you don’t have to go on that journey alone. Having a bag of goodies with you to help detoxify the mind and body is the best way for you to reach your goal of an alcohol-free month (or life).
